Testimony of Eugenia Kirk, FBCC Student Senate member, to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp

Here are some words from North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp

“The seeds of some of our nation’s brightest and promising talent are planted right here at home, in the classrooms of North Dakota’s tribal colleges,” said Heitkamp. “Every day our Native youth are beating the odds stacked against them, and persevering to educate and prepare themselves for lives that strengthens their communities and emboldens their futures. Our teachers and students at Fort Berthold Community College live and breathe that resolve in all that they do, and earlier this month I was fortunate enough to meet with several of these students. Hearing their dreams, their challenges and their triumphs in overcoming disproportionate hardship was truly an inspiration. It’s imperative that we as a nation uphold our tribal colleges for the cultural strength displayed by all who attend these institutions by lifting them up with the same resources and support we show our top universities. We must encourage the continued

resilience and perseverance in our Native communities, and we can do it by making sure our tribal colleges are interwoven with our country’s educational priorities. That’s why I’ll continue to march in lockstep with our Native students and our tribal colleges – so that we can build a better future for our tribal communities for generations to come.”
